XH3001 Competency Discussion Answer

1.  How would you define “person-centered care” as a professional nurse?

An approach to nursing that puts the patient at the center of all the decisions and activities related to healthcare. Person centered care means treating the individual as an individual, which as a professional nurse, I believe is recognizing that there are personal values, preferences, beliefs and needs to be considered. It is about the dignity of the patient, the independence of the patient and encouraging patient participation in their treatment and care decisions (Alfahmi, 2022). It is performed through the effective communication process, empathy, and working in collaboration with patients, families and other health care workers. But if the nurse thinks more about the person than the disease then he or she will be able to care for more compassionately, more holistically and more effectively.

2.  What is an example of how you might engage in person-centered care?

An example of this is providing person centered care to an individual with a diabetes care plan who has an issue with a food plan. As well as saying what the patient should eat or what s/he should not eat, I would discuss with the patient his or her lifestyle, cultural preferences, and the problems he or she faces in everyday life. We would create a feasible eating plan based on medical needs and considering their preferred and life circumstances. I would be engaging the patient in sharing concerned, asking questions and in making decisions (Verberne et al., 2022). I can ensure my care is personalized and reflective of their needs by listening and adapting, improving adherence to their care and support to achieve better health outcomes.
